He contributed to the development of 18th century German music by writing music in almost every category, from orchestral works, operas, chamber music, and religious works to instrumental music. He was almost entirely self-taught in music, composing his first opera at the age of 12, and is said to have been able to play numerous instruments, including flute, violin, trombone, and cello. This album features bassoon and guitar performances of various pieces Telemann wrote during his years in Hamburg. With some superb playing by Seidel and Marx, the pieces sound as if they were written by Telemann for these instruments. The two Fantasias are based on the \"12 Fantasias for viola da gamba solo\" published in 1735\/36. The Fantasia in D major was arranged by Marx himself and played on guitar, and the Fantasia in E flat major was arranged by Leonovich for cello and further played on bassoon.
