Lehmann was also renowned for her art songs, which she performed with subtle nuance and a free-spirited interpretation. In particular, her art song recitals at the Salzburg Festival in the 1930s, with Bruno Walter as her accompanist, have become the stuff of legend. This CD is the first of two volumes in the Naxos edition of Lehmann’s complete lieder recordings from the late 1930s. It includes several songs from Schubert’s *Winterreise* (Lehmann was the first singer to record the entire *Winterreise*). It also includes works by Brahms and Wolf.
