Few performances can match this one, and none surpass it.\nAlong with Tchaikovsky’s “Pathetique,” which begins with a poignant performance, these two landmark recordings—which shine brightly in the history of recorded music—are now being released as a new reissue CD set.\n\n\nProducer’s Notes by Mark Obert-Thorne\n\nFor this reissue, we selected the discs and sides in the best condition from four sets of pre-war American Victor “Gold Label” SPs and one set of British HMVs for *Pathétique*, and from four sets of American Victor “Gold” SPs and one set of French Disque Gramophone for *Prelude and Love’s Death*. Some scratches originate from the master recordings themselves; we decided to leave them as is, removing only those that were particularly noticeable.
