Although he became best known for his performances of works by Khachaturian, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff—music to which he felt a special affinity—Kapel also performed a wide-ranging repertoire. Rachmaninoff’s “Sonata for Cello and Piano” is one of Kapel’s few chamber music recordings, and his performance skillfully blends passion with an outpouring of inner emotion. The recording of Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 2” serves as a rare and excellent example of how Kapell—despite rarely performing Beethoven in concert—played with a natural flow of music and crystal-clear technical precision.
