In 1919, he joined the Civic Opera in Chicago and remained active there until his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1932. Skipa, who stood out at the time as a “tenor di grazia,” possessed a clear, resonant voice with exquisite sweetness. Skipa’s smooth and light singing was particularly well-suited to Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti, and surpassed that of anyone of his time or later generations. He was also a rare find among lyric tenors for his ability to express fervent emotion and passion.
