Born in Northampton, the same town as Olwyn and Rabbler, Arnold was the principal trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and was a master of orchestral sound, using brass and percussion to great effect. He also had a broad perspective, incorporating folk songs from around England and pop music such as jazz and Latin into his compositions. These elements are evident in many of his symphonies, which, combined with their tonal clarity, catchy melodies, and good orchestration, provide many dramatic and carefree moments that could easily be included in a scene from an action or suspense movie. The music is dramatic and enjoyable in many scenes. However, during the period of composition from 1949 (No. 1) to 1986 (No. 9), he was sometimes neglected as a symphony composer because of his \"easy-to-understand and enjoyable\" style. He also worked in light music and film music, and the fact that his music for \"Bridges Over the Battlefield\" won an Academy Award may have spurred such a trend. However, looking back on that music now, it sounds as if it conveys the vibrancy of postwar England, which became the center of world music culture. Among them, only the New Year's Eve No. 9, written after his battle with illness, sounds as poignant as Arnold's personal monologue. Charles Groves played a major role in the premiere and introduction of Arnold's symphonies. Andrew Penny, who conducts this complete set of numbered symphonies, was a conductor trained by Groves, and the recording session was conducted in Arnold's presence. The disc of Symphony No. 9 includes a dialogue between Arnold and Penny (in English).
