John Field was born in Ireland and moved with his family to London when he was 11 years old. He studied under composer and piano maker Muzio Clementi, and at the age of 19, his first collection of piano sonatas was published, demonstrating his talent. He then moved to Russia, performing in Vienna and Paris. He was welcomed by the aristocracy of the region, and for a time he taught Glinka, earning him a high reputation in Russia. Perhaps his greatest achievement was the creation of the "nocturne" form. His single-movement works, which are free from formal constraints, greatly influenced Chopin and other composers of the Romantic period. His pieces, filled with sweet and beautiful melodies, have a simple charm that is different from Chopin's. In this box set, we present a selection of his piano music. In this box, you will hear all of his piano concertos and nocturnes, performed by the British virtuoso Frith. Naxos Japan
