In November 2023, Kirill Petrenko led the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to Japan, and since his appointment as Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in August 2019, fans who have been waiting for the performance of this duo in Japan have been eagerly awaiting this album. The tour started on November 14 in Takamatsu, Japan, and the 10 concerts in 6 cities were a great success with thunderous applause and cheers. The tour started on November 14 in Takamatsu, Japan, and was a great success with thunderous applause and cheers. This is the second album commemorating the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff's birth, and includes Symphony No. 2, \"The Island of Death,\" Symphonic Dances, and the second piano concerto with Kirill Gerstein that was released as the first album. Petrenko has said in interviews, \"Whenever I listen to Rachmaninoff's music, I feel as if I am listening to a part of my own homeland.\" Rachmaninoff's music is so important to him that he has said, \"I always feel as if I am listening to a part of my hometown. Petrenko made his first appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2006, and after only three appearances with the orchestra, he was chosen as its principal conductor. The first piece he conducted was Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2, which is also included here. In 1906, Rachmaninoff composed his Second Symphony. After the disastrous failure of his First Symphony, the success of the premiere of the Second Symphony marked a revival for Rachmaninoff. It is a confident work in which Rachmaninoff defies the neoclassical trends of the early 20th century, remaining faithful to tonality and anticipating the style of Hollywood film music with its languid musical language. Petrenko emphasizes not only the vast emotional expression in the works at the core of this edition, but also their stunning textures. Then there is the symphonic poem \"The Island of Death,\" which Rachmaninoff conducted regularly until his exile in 1917.Inspired by a black-and-white copy of the painting of the same name by Arnold Böcklin, the tune is in five beats and sways like a ship on high waves. The solemn Dies Ile (Day of Wrath) motif used in the Requiem recurs not only in this piece but also in other works by Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 with Kirill Gerstein, performed at the Waldbühne in 2022; Rachmaninoff himself performed the premiere in 1901. Rachmaninoff himself played the piano in the premiere in 1901, the Berlin Philharmonic premiered the work in 1903, and Rachmaninoff himself made his solo debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1908, laying the foundation for his brilliant international career as a pianist and composer. The Symphonic Dances is Rachmaninoff's last work. Here, too, the Dies Ile motif rings out again and again. In his later years, Rachmaninoff is said to have said that this work was his masterpiece. It is a fitting conclusion to this edition.
