Description:

The last concert at the Concertgebouw on the day Haitink bid farewell to his hometown as a conductor. This recording has been highly acclaimed by American Record Guide, Gramophone (UK), Het Parole (Netherlands), and others. This is a live recording of the last concert conducted by Haitink at the Concertgebouw in his native Amsterdam, where he announced his retirement in 2019. The orchestra is the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, which he had been associated with since the beginning of his career in 1955, and had served as its principal conductor since 1957. The last piece he chose was Bruckner's Seventh, which has been an important part of his repertoire throughout his life. This was also the program he performed in his last concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic in the same year, so it is clear that Haitink chose this piece with a special feeling. The clear interpretation of the sound was rich and fresh, and the grandeur of the music, which connected long stretches of time in one breath, was so comfortable that one felt like taking a deep breath in the music. The unique sound of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, which is well-rounded yet soft and warm, is a perfect match for Bruckner. This is a record of an irreplaceable and moving performance of Bruckner's music in his homeland, the Netherlands. The moment in "Wagner's Funeral Music" when the chorale rings out as if the gods had descended is one of the highlights in the history of Bruckner performances. ...From the commentary by Kenjiro Sakairi, King International.
