An opera in four acts for which the composer wrote both music and libretto, it is filled with the fragile beauty of melody that is Leoncavallo's hallmark. Before the success of his best-known work, Pagliacci, Leoncavallo earned his living playing the piano in Parisian music halls, and the world of the suburban Paris music hall in which this opera is set is vividly drawn as a result. Zazà was premiered in 1900 at the Teatro Lirico in Milan. Leoncavallo later produced a revised version in 1919, shortly before his death, cutting passages he considered longwinded; this production is based on that revision, while also drawing in places on the original 1900 version.\n\nSynopsis\nZazà, the star attraction of a music hall in Saint-Étienne outside Paris, becomes the lover of the Parisian businessman Milio Dufresne and hopes to marry him. But Cascart, a fellow performer and her former lover, tells her he has seen Milio in Paris with another woman. Furious, she bursts into Milio's house, only to find his daughter Totò there. Realising that he has concealed a wife and child, Zazà - who as a child saw her own father abandon the family and her mother turn to drink - resolves to end the affair rather than let Totò suffer as she did, and accepts her fate.\n\nThe title role is taken by the Russian soprano Svetlana Aksenova, who sings this demanding part, on stage almost throughout, with power and brilliance. Milio is sung by the Graz-born Austrian tenor Nikolai Schukoff, whose career has been built on jugendlicher Heldentenor roles. The British baritone Christopher Maltman drives the drama forward as Cascart with tremendous intensity.\nZazà is still not often staged today, and one reason given is that it is \"so painfully real that too many people see themselves in it\".
