Violinist Amri Koeto, formerly a super-soloist with the France Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, joined the quartet, ushering in a new era for the ensemble.\nThis album presents masterpieces that vividly illustrate the history of the string quartet, performed with the Modigliani String Quartet’s superb, well-coordinated ensemble playing.\nHaydn’s “Erdédy Quartets” are considered to represent the pinnacle of his string quartet compositions. While the collection includes such masterpieces as No. 77, “The Emperor,” and No. 78, “The Sunrise,” the focus here is on No. 76—known as “The Fifth” due to its opening fifth-based theme—one of the finest works among Haydn’s string quartets, which are renowned for their diverse and free-spirited style. The Modigliani Quartet’s fresh interpretation allows us to rediscover the charm of this work.\nBartók’s String Quartet No. 3 was composed in 1927 and dedicated to the Philadelphia Music Foundation. The ensemble delivers a powerful performance of Bartók’s unique rhythms with intense focus.\nFinally, from the “Haydn Set”—a collection of six string quartets that Mozart dedicated to Joseph Haydn, whom he regarded as his mentor in chamber music composition—comes No. 19, “Dissonance,” which features bold harmonic progressions.
