Wagner: siegfried's Rhine Journey; Siegfried's Funeral Ma - Import CD

Credits:

John Barbirolli

Description:

A world premiere release: Barbirolli in Mozart and Wagner

Barbirolli (1899-1970) with the Halle Orchestra, in a concert given on 21 January 1964: a programme of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and three excerpts from Wagner's Gotterdammerung. The source is the BBC's tape of the pre-concert rehearsal recording, unpublished material unearthed by Testament and released here for the first time anywhere.

The Halle Orchestra traces its history back to 1858. Barbirolli was its music director from 1943 until his death, and turned an orchestra that had been fighting for survival into one of international standing.

Barbirolli never made a commercial recording of Mozart's Symphony No. 40; only a BBC studio broadcast from 1962 had appeared on CD. This 1964 performance, taken at a comfortable tempo, has all his characteristic seriousness of purpose together with softer shadings and a careful ear for balance - a reading of real depth of flavour.

His relationship with Wagner went back a long way; Wagner was the first composer he programmed as a conductor, in 1927. The orchestral control he had built up, combined with his innate operatic instinct, produces an ideal performance here too. The final item, "Brunnhilde's Immolation", brings in the soprano Anita Valkki (1926-2011). A Finnish dramatic soprano, she made her London debut in 1961 and sang Brunnhilde at Bayreuth in 1963 and 1964, emerging at a time when the prevailing view was that Birgit Nilsson alone could succeed Flagstad, Varnay and Modl. The result is an event worthy of the 150th anniversary of Wagner's birth.
"The singing was consistently musical, passionate and noble... The orchestra played with astonishing power and sonority, conveying a thrilling grandeur while still bringing out all the precision of the score." (Michael Kennedy, Daily Telegraph, Manchester edition)
King International
