From Baroque repertoire to contemporary music, and in collaborations with musicians from other traditions in his \"Thracian music\" project, he has captivated audiences everywhere with formidable precision and intelligence. His new release on BIS is a cross-cultural album entitled \"Nomaden\" (Nomads), bringing together Queyras and eighteen fellow musicians. It is the story of a journey in which the protagonist (Queyras) \"meets\" eighteen musicians from many different places and backgrounds, and enters into dialogue with them. Rather than a concerto for cello and ensemble, it is a concertante work for cello and soloists from other musical cultures. An introduction is followed by eleven passages and twenty-five pieces evoking the music of various regions, closing with an epilogue - thirty-eight movements in all. Commissioned by the Amsterdam Cello Biennale and composed for Queyras and the Atlas Ensemble, it was premiered on 28 October 2016. This release presents the recording of that premiere, together with a session recording made on 5 November.\n\nThe minimalist exchanges between cello and erhu, and the microtonal duelling between cello and the Indian bowed sarangi, are genuinely exciting. Hearing music of such difficulty, one cannot help feeling that only Queyras could have brought it off.\n\nThe Atlas Ensemble is made up of players of instruments indigenous to China, Japan, India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and various parts of Europe. Every note is newly composed by Joël Bons; no traditional pieces are quoted. Bons has collaborated with the Atlas Ensemble for fourteen years, and this work can be regarded as the summation of that partnership. Some of the players cannot read music but improvise magnificently; others can play the most demanding written parts but do not improvise.
