The album title, *The Triumphal Way*, refers to a straight road lined with historic buildings and monuments that runs westward from the center of Paris, the capital of France—also known as the “Historical Axis of Paris” or the “King’s Road.” The program features French music from the 19th and 20th centuries. Berlioz’s *Grand Symphonie funèbre et triomphale*, commissioned by the French government to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the July Revolution of 1830. The program brings together works featuring the fresh ideas and sounds of wind ensemble music—said to have ushered in a new era following the French Revolution of 1791—including a piece by Saint-Saëns that, as the title suggests, was inspired by “the contrast between the Eastern and Western worlds.” Conductor Ole Christian Rude has served as music director of the Norwegian Military Band since 2006.
