His three visits to Japan, during which he performed Kabalevsky’s Cello Concerto No. 2 with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, have become the stuff of legend. On this disc, you can fully savor that very piece—dedicated to Shafran and premiered by him—in a performance with the Leningrad Philharmonic conducted by the composer himself. He was an expert on Kabalevsky and also served as a co-creator, offering advice on the cello parts of the composer’s works. While Kabalevsky is often strongly associated with “The Clown’s Galop,” this piece showcases a stern, hard-edged style that is far removed from any sense of lightheartedness. Combined with Shafran’s soulful performance, it is a series of deeply moving moments—a revival of this performance that allows us to rediscover Kabalevsky’s true value. For the Boccherini concerto, he performs with Arvid Jansons—Maris’s father and a familiar figure with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
