Although there are several recordings from his later years with the London Philharmonic, this is currently the only one featuring a Russian orchestra. Recorded in 1968 when Svetlanov was 40 years old, this recording offers a youthful, energetic performance. The violin soloist is Heinrich Friedheim (Genlif Friedgeim), who was then concertmaster of the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra, and he delivers a melody that is poignantly beautiful. While the overall tempo is unhurried, the climaxes are, of course, quintessentially Svetlanov, and the skill of the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra shines through. The other three recordings are from 1984, during his mature period, and are explosive performances brimming with Svetlanov’s signature style.
