After three years of choral conducting classes, he studied music theory with Zintals Kriavinsch and composition with Carlis Tenne. After interrupting his studies for military service, he returned to the Latvian National Conservatory of Music (now the Latvian Academy of Music) in 1970 to study with Adolphus Skulte, from which he graduated in 1975.
