Ivanovs / Kuzma, Guntis / Latvian National Symphony

Description:

Jánis Ivanovs (1906-1983) is regarded as the most gifted "symphonic" writer in the history of Latvian music. The two symphonies recorded by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and Guntis Kuzma, previously heard only in radio broadcast copies and on vinyl in the 1970s and 1980s, are subtitled "Symphonia ipsa" (the symphony itself). Symphony No. 15", subtitled "Symphonia ipsa" (the symphony itself), is composed of "Moderato", "Molto Allegro", "Molto Andante (Adagio)", "Moderato. Symphony No. 16" has "Allegro moderato," "Allegro," "Andante. Pesante," and "Allegro moderato," all in four movements. This symphony is said to have opened the door for Ivanovs to present a series of works reflecting the political atmosphere of the period "the decline of the Brezhnev regime" of the Soviet Union, which had Latvia under its control.
