The nobility of nobility even in wartime! Prokofiev finally makes his debut in our ever-growing series on music of wartime! The \"Semyon Kotko\" Suite is a concert symphonic suite from the opera of the same name. The story is about Semyon Kotko, a young man returning to his village from the front during the Ukrainian Civil War in 1918. When Semyon learns that Sophia is about to be married off to a landowner by her father, he burns down the church and rescues Sophia, but Semyon is captured by the enemy and saved by his comrades just before his execution. The story itself is a picture-perfect socialist realism, but the genius of Prokofiev's music reaches beyond the story. The sweet, chromatic music at the beginning has a late Romantic flavor, and the battle scene is reminiscent of \"Alexander Nevsky\" and makes one shudder. The waltz suites are newly arranged by the composer himself from his past works. 2, 4, and 6 are taken from \"Cinderella,\" 1 and 5 from \"War and Peace,\" and 3 from the film music \"Lermontov,\" so to speak, Proko's version of \"elegant and sentimental waltz. It is a beautiful suite, so brilliant and decadent that it is a wonder that the Soviet authorities did not ban its performance.
