The man who made such a huge impact on them and captivated them completely was Joseph Spence (1910-84), a brilliant guitarist from Andros Island in the Bahamas. The recordings presented here were recorded in 1965, when he was at the peak of his powers, but have never been released to the public. In other words, it is a completely new album produced from his precious archives! Joseph Spence was born on Andros Island in the Bahamas, the son of a minister, and brought back to the Bahamas the songs he had learned while working as a migrant in the U.S. He played guitar while working as a mason. In 1958, he was "discovered" by musicologist Samuel Charters and experienced recording for the first time in his life. He made a few more recordings and toured the United States during the 1960s and 1970s, but never made a living from music, dying in 1984.However, his unique bass lines and rhythms produced by his unusual tuning (drop D tuning) and his playful, adventurous, and lively improvisations have revolutionized traditional Bahamian music and influenced players around the world. His fluid and prodigious fingering has earned him the nickname "Thelonious Monk" of the guitar world, while his powerful voice and lyrics, sung in the traditional rhyming style of Bahamian sponge fishermen, and his unique scatting and humming during singing, have had a fresh impact on the people of the Bahamas. The song was sung in the traditional rhyming style of the Bahamian sponge fishermen. The works presented here include the well-known repertoire of 'Out ont he Rolling Sea' and 'Bimini Gal', as well as rare live recordings of hymns and fishermen's songs from Andros Island, 'Death & the Woman' sung in a call and response format with Joseph's sister: Edith Pinder and her family, and the Weavers' recordings of Pete Seeger, who was also a member of the band. In addition, there is a call and response version of 'Death & the Woman' sung with Joseph's sister Edith Pinder and her family, and a sad song about a shipwreck in the Bahamas in 1929, which was also recorded by the Weavers, a band that Pete Seeger was a member of. The album also includes a number that has never been heard on previous recordings, such as 'Run Come See Jerusalem'! The recording condition/mastering is also phenomenal, and the vibrancy, breath, and beautiful guitar sounds are so realistic that they seem to be unfolding in real time right next to the listener's ears. In addition, the booklet, which includes many rare and treasured photos and a loving and wonderful commentary (in English), is also outstanding! Every detail of the work is deeply moving. This is the Smithsonian Folkways' finest work to date. This is a must-have for Joseph fans, Ry Cooder and other guitarists, and will surely capture the hearts of all kinds of music fans.

Tracklisting:

1.
