He was discovered by pianist Victor Benham and received a formal, professional education. As a young man, he studied at the Guildhall School of Music while discovering the music of Delius and Bartók, and spent his early career working his way up as a jazz musician and arranger.\n\nAround 1934, he began to make a name for himself in the world of film music, composing scores for over 100 films and becoming one of Britain’s leading composers in the field. The orchestration techniques he honed in this field would later be put to use in his compositions for pure classical music. His “Violin Concerto,” dedicated to the victims of the Nazi Holocaust, was premiered by his close friend, the violinist Max Rostal, and cemented his worldwide reputation as one of his masterpieces. In 1957, he moved to Switzerland to focus on composing pure music. While incorporating the twelve-tone technique and serialism, he did not adhere strictly to atonality; instead, guided by the philosophy that “melody is the essential material,” he developed a unique style that retained tonality. He was extremely prolific, composing eight symphonies and five string quartets, among other works, and passed away at the age of 66 while working on an opera and his Ninth Symphony. Although his work was once largely forgotten, in recent years it has been reevaluated for its lyricism and rich originality.\nThis 11-disc box set includes Symphonies Nos. 1–8, concertos, orchestral works, chamber music, and his major film scores—including the complete score for the film *The Battle of the Bulge*—fully conveying the appeal of his music.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"CPO","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53419247206689,"sku":"4589538834494","price":26190.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538834494.jpg?v=1788227584","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4589538834494","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
