He traveled to Ferrara at a young age to further his studies and secured his first position at the Accademia della Morte there. He later moved to Rome, where he served as organist at the Church of Santa Maria in Valicella and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Queen Christina of Sweden, who was an important patron of musicians in Rome, was reportedly so impressed by Pasquini’s exceptional playing skills that she praised him as the “Prince of Music.” He also enjoyed the patronage of distinguished families such as the Colonna and Pamphili families, and became particularly close to the Borghese family—whose name is still associated with a famous art museum today—living in their residence from 1664 until his death.\nAlthough Pasquini is now known primarily as a composer of keyboard music, he also composed numerous vocal works, including operas and oratorios. In the field of oratorio in particular, he was highly regarded even in his own time, as evidenced by a commission from Queen Christina in 1675, the Christian Holy Year. Although Pasquini is said to have composed more than 30 oratorios, only seven survive today; *Moses*, composed in 1687, is one of them. It is based on the Book of Exodus from the Old Testament.\nThe characters include Moses, his attendant Joshua, his father-in-law Jethro, and the narrator—four in all. The story unfolds as Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, visits Moses after his escape from Egypt, and Moses recounts his journey. The work builds dramatic tension through scenes such as Joshua leading the army in battle against the Amalekites and Moses’s prayer to God, before concluding with a triumphant finale. The work opens with a sinfonia in concerto grosso form performed by a string ensemble, and the fast, complex passages in the vocal parts—which make use of melismas—demand a high level of technical skill from the singers. With its delicate portrayal of the characters’ emotional nuances and subtle shifts in tempo and dynamics blending seamlessly with the dramatic unfolding of the story, the work is truly worthy of being called a masterpiece oratorio.\nLed by Manfred Kordes, a leading authority on 16th- and 17th-century music research and performance, the Bremen Weser Renaissance is a long-established early music ensemble that has released over 50 albums, primarily on the CPO label.
