Born in Sicily, A. Scarlatti rose to prominence in the Habsburg Kingdom of Naples, and in 1684, at a young age and to the surprise of many of his senior colleagues, he was appointed Royal Kapellmeister. *The Triumph of Divine Grace* was composed in 1685, the year his son Domenico—who would later make a name for himself as a master of keyboard music—was born. Composed to a libretto by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili, a music lover, this work featured some of the finest castrati (male high-voiced singers) of the time, such as Siface and Checcarelli. It attracted attention from the moment of its premiere in Rome and, over the next 20 years, was performed in Modena, Mantua, Bologna, and Vienna—among Europe’s leading musical centers—over the next two decades. While Part 1 uses fluid music to portray Mary Magdalene—who cannot fully shed the doubts of a life spent amid worldly vanity and pleasures—Part 2, depicting her awakening to repentance and her resolve to follow the path of faith, is composed with a more solid musical structure, culminating in a dramatic recitative rather than an aria or chorus—an original compositional structure. Weaving together a small instrumental ensemble with tight ensemble playing, the three singers draw out the work’s unique character with their distinctive, beautiful voices, allowing listeners to fully appreciate A.
