At the core of the album are traditional ballads (narrative folk songs) from England, Scotland, and Ireland, collected in the late 19th century by Francis Child, Cecil Sharp, and others. These songs later formed the roots of American folk music, and the album also draws inspiration from interpretations by artists such as Simon \u0026amp; Garfunkel during the 1960s folk revival. The accompaniment features period instruments such as the Baroque harp, viola da gamba, pandora, bowlan (a frame drum found in Scotland and elsewhere), various historical flutes, and small bagpipes.
