In the German-speaking world, following the Thirty Years’ War—which lasted until the mid-17th century—a unique style of violin music emerged, drawing inspiration from the solo violin music developed in Italy during the first half of that century and making effective use of alternative tunings. In this process, the viola da gamba—which had been in use since the beginning of the century—was also effectively employed to enrich the lower-midrange of ensemble performances, and numerous works remain in which both the violin and the gamba are treated as leading instruments. With this background in mind, the viola da gamba—designed for the alto and tenor registers—makes its presence felt throughout this album.
