Although the three-act opera tells a story swirling with love and intrigue set in Egypt—a land conquered by the renowned Roman general Caesar—it is often performed and recorded with sections cut for various reasons. The significance of the brilliant Bicket’s decision to undertake a complete recording without any omissions is immeasurable. It is also a delight that The English Concert, with its exquisite ensemble playing, allows us to fully appreciate every nuance of the orchestration, which skillfully employs wind instruments such as the natural horn, oboe, and recorder. The rich basso continuo, which incorporates instruments such as the harp, theorbo, and viola da gamba, is also highly effective.
