It is an excellent program presented by the French early music ensemble Il Caravaggio, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2027. Ferlandini, the composer of *The Lamentation of Mary*, was an Italian who, like his contemporaries Pergolesi and W.F. Bach, rose to the forefront of the European music scene at a young age and became a court composer for the Elector of Bavaria. This work is a song of the Virgin Mary mourning the loss of her son Jesus, who breathed his last on the cross; its richly expressive solo singing is captivating, comparable even to the works of his contemporaries Vivaldi and the talented composers of the Neapolitan School. The English composer Purcell’s *Saul and the Witch of Endor* conveys the fear and sorrow of King Saul, who, having been forsaken by God, clings to a medium but receives only prophecies of doom. Charpentier’s *The Denial of Saint Peter* succinctly depicts the entire sequence of events in which the Apostle Peter—startled by the foretelling of his own betrayal at the Last Supper—actually betrays Jesus and weeps bitterly. The performance, which conveys each emotional nuance with great passion and depth, is truly magnificent; led by the popular singer Vidal, who exudes the dignity of a true master, the individuality of each singer shines through. Viola da gamba player Lucas Pérez, who forms the backbone of Le Poème Harmonique, as well as Fiona-Emily Poupart—who is also a core member of the string sections of both Le Poème Harmonique and Le Banc Céleste—the instrumentalists’ performances are full of highlights. This is a truly satisfying release, as one would expect from AlphaClassics, a label with a proven track record in early music.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Alpha","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53419247698209,"sku":"4589538833978","price":3790.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538833978.jpg?v=1788227583","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4589538833978","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
