Machaut, who was one of the foremost love poets of the 14th century alongside the Italian Petrarch, served as a canon at Reims Cathedral. Combining his exceptional linguistic sensibility with exquisite musical syntax, he left behind many masterpieces that represent the very essence of the Ars Nova. Here, led by the *Notre Dame Mass*—the oldest surviving work in which the entire Ordinary of the Catholic Mass was composed as a single piece—we have carefully selected masterpieces that encapsulate the pinnacle of his artistry. From the “Virelai,” where his compositional genius shines through even in a single melody, to the “Motetus,” in which each part sings a different line of text simultaneously, and the “Ballade,” which masterfully employs subtle shifts in rhythm and meter to create thrilling musical developments—this collection showcases the unique charms of these works.
