Although his name appears frequently in the writings of Leopold Mozart and Charles Burney, our knowledge of his life remains limited to fragmentary records. Born in Amsterdam, his career spanned the Rhine River basin, and in 1780 he was appointed concertmaster of the Karlsruhe Court Orchestra. At the request of Music Director Schmidtbauer, he took on the major task of rebuilding the orchestra—which had been plagued by internal discord—and developing it into a modern orchestra. His creative focus was on instrumental works, and he devoted particular energy to symphonies; 31 of them are known to survive today. While the influence of the Mannheim School is evident in these works, they also possess a more folksy and accessible character. This album features two contrasting works—a brilliant Symphony in C major and a Symphony in E-flat major with a leisurely introduction—along with a Symphony in G major composed in three movements in the style of an opera overture (sinfonia), and an early “Pastoral” Symphony in D major, which has been proven to be an authentic work, dispelling theories that it was a forgery.
