Sibelius studied under Goldmark in Vienna from 1890 to 1891, and this brief yet significant connection served as the inspiration for this album. Goldmark’s concerto is a large-scale work with a running time of about 40 minutes, and the music is eloquent. It blends the passionate expression characteristic of Hungarian music with the sweet melodies and sounds typical of German Romanticism, and offers ample opportunities to showcase advanced technique. In contrast, the paired works by Sibelius are all short pieces, none longer than about five minutes, and are relatively understated. These are works that test the performer’s ability to convey delicate, lyrical, and introspective expression. By pairing works that challenge contrasting expressive abilities, this album demonstrates a rich musicality—it could be described as a shrewd choice—and the execution is superb, from the breathtaking technique to the beautiful sound.
