Now in its midpoint, this recording project—which has been underway on the ALPHA label since 2014—has previously released 15 albums focusing on the appeal of Haydn’s lesser-known but rich body of early and mid-period works. True to its subtitle, “Surprise,” features his most famous large-scale works from his late period (commonly known as the “London Symphonies”). In addition to Symphony No. 94, “Surprise” (the famous work in which the slow movement begins quietly only to be suddenly interrupted by a fortissimo from the full orchestra), the other two symphonies also contain unexpected developments that keep the listener on the edge of their seat right up to the final moments of the last movement. Based on 18th-century performance practice, Antonini delivers a dynamic and richly textured interpretation that allows listeners to fully appreciate the young Haydn’s wit—which he has showcased throughout his career—and to deeply feel how that spirit continues to pulse through these late works as well. This concert features a joint performance by the two orchestras that have collaborated on this project (string section: 8\/8\/5\/5\/3), with concertmaster Barnesi and numerous period instrument players active as soloists participating. It is a real treat to have Buccarella, winner of the Bruges Early Music Competition, participating—not in the basso continuo, but solely in the brief solo heard in the fourth movement of Symphony No. 98.
