He is also known for having taught Kunihiko Hashimoto while the latter was studying at the University of Vienna. In his early career, he attracted attention for his atonal music and expressionist style, and before the war, he was one of the most frequently performed composers in the German-speaking world. However, in 1938, the rise of the Nazis forced him into exile in England. While teaching at the University of Oxford, he suspended his compositional activities and remained silent until the end of the war, but after the war, he regained his enthusiasm for composition. Notably, nearly half of his works were written after the age of 60, with his nine symphonies forming the core of this body of work. In these late works, he consciously incorporated the Austrian symphonic tradition stretching from Haydn to Mahler. For Veles, composing symphonies was a process of healing his own heart by confronting the sorrow of having lost his distant homeland through the fusion of orderly formal beauty and rich lyricism.\nCD 5 features works accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Veles’s focus on this genre was influenced by the profound impact he felt upon witnessing the premiere of Schoenberg’s “Chamber Symphony No. 1.” In his own writings, Veles argued that a small orchestra is best suited to draw out the theatrical expression of singers to the fullest and to create delicate, dramatic effects.
