Following the Treaty of Nijmegen, which was concluded in 1679 after wars with the Netherlands and the Habsburg Empire, the opera premiered in February 1680 to celebrate the marriage of Louis XIV’s eldest son, the Dauphin. After a repeat performance in November of that same year—attended by the Dauphine, who had been unable to arrive in France in time for the premiere—the opera was revived periodically until the mid-18th century. it also enjoyed such popularity that it was staged in major cities abroad, including Antwerp, Wolfenbüttel, and Amsterdam. Lusse \u0026amp; Les Tarans Lyriques, renowned worldwide for their interpretations of Baroque opera, once again provide solid support for a masterful performance by a lineup of leading singers. Just as in their previous recording of *Attis*, the performance begins with an overture without a harpsichord; they demonstrate a commanding presence not only in the numerous entrées featuring both chorus and orchestra but also in the solo and dialogue sections, which are filled with a theatrical, vivid intensity. The harpsichord is played by a duo of Lusse and Joly-Vignole; there are also two lute players (one of whom is the virtuoso André Heinrich); the Madouf brothers, prodigies of the natural trumpet; and the veteran percussionist Marie-Ange Petit—all of whom shine as accomplished musicians.
