Nenna was a contemporary of Marenzio and G. Gabrieli. Born in Bari, in the southern Italian region of Puglia—then part of the Spanish Kingdom of Naples—as the son of a minor noble, he flourished as a musician under the patronage of the powerful Carafa family of the Kingdom of Naples. He even dedicated works to Fabrizio Carafa, the adulterous lover whom Gesualdo—who would later become his patron—had brutally murdered in 1590 while he was having a secret tryst with Gesualdo’s wife. It is said that Gesualdo was inspired by Nenna to begin composing, and in the works of his First Book of Madrigals (included on this album), compiled in 1582—before the two even met—one can sense the nascent harmonies that foreshadowed Gesualdo’s pioneering style. Nenna’s compositional style—which, within an overall harmonious sensibility that is pleasing to the ear, subtly incorporates effective use of sound that occasionally startles the listener—becomes particularly evident when contrasted with the instrumental works of De Macchi and Trabacchi, which exemplify the avant-garde nature of the contemporary Neapolitan school. The French early music ensemble Comet Music, led by Chilean gamba player Francisco Manalich, presents a meticulous interpretation that interweaves the sound of period instruments—centered on a string ensemble played with bows, without plucked or keyboard instruments—with a cappella singing.
