The music that adorns the ball in Act II, Scene 3 of the opera has been arranged into a suite with the collaboration of Imogen Holst.\n\"Sinfonia da Requiem\" was written in 1939 as one of several works commissioned by Japan from composers around the world for a concert commemorating the 2,600th anniversary of the Imperial Era the following year. However, the Japanese government at the time was perplexed by the content, which was heavily influenced by the memorial for Britten’s own parents and the global situation surrounding the recently begun Second World War. While there are various theories regarding the reasons, the result was that the work was never performed in Japan at that time.
