He was taught piano and composition by his father and older brother, and taught himself to play the flute. 19 years old, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a successful performer and composer. Influenced by Haydn and Mozart, his works were highly acclaimed not only in Amsterdam but also in Leipzig. After the death of his wife in 1821, he gradually withdrew from public activities while raising four children and earning a living as a Mennonite church organist. Willems' works, many of which are instrumental, number approximately 120. His Symphony No. 6 in D minor, dating from around 1834, shows his mastery of compositional technique, with its complex counterpoint and harmony. The album also includes four other overtures. The overture in E major is described as \"pastoral\" and the overture in E flat major on track 6 as \"heroic,\" with Beethoven's influence particularly evident in the latter. The overture in F minor is described as \"tragic\" and is dominated by a dark mood. The Munich Radio Orchestra and its principal conductor, Ivan Lepcic, perform this work.
