Born to music-loving parents, he showed early talent and entered the Leipzig Conservatory at the end of his teens, where he studied with Carl Reinecke. After returning to Japan, he taught music in Basel and at the age of 37 became a professor at the Basel Conservatory. He eventually became director of the conservatory and trained many students. His works show the influence of Brahms and Saint-Saens, with whom he was very close. This album contains two piano quintets written in his later years.No. 1, which opens with a fugue led by the solo violin, is dramatic throughout and truly reminiscent of Brahms, while No. 2, which begins with a pizzicato for strings and an arpeggio for piano, is a Schumann-like work with a narrative in each movement. These two contrasting works are carefully performed by Oliver Trindle on piano and the Carmina Quartet.
