World Premiere Recording of Láboa's Piano Concerto that Paved the Way for the History of the Left-Handed Piano Concerto! German-born pianist Oliver Trindle and the CAPRICCIO label's Josef LaBois project presents a long-awaited piano concerto for the left hand. The Austrian-born composer Láboa lost his sight at the age of three, but he showed great musical talent and made a great career as a teacher. Among his students were Schoenberg, Alma Mahler, and Paul Wittgenstein. Born into a prominent Viennese family, Wittgenstein had a promising future as a pianist, but lost his right hand due to an injury sustained in World War I. However, he took up the challenge of continuing to play with his left hand and, using the family fortune, commissioned piano concertos for the left hand from renowned composers, many of which he premiered himself. These works have become a major asset to the field today. The works in this collection are the beginning of this trend. Each is titled Konzertstuck Concerto, and each is 20 to 25 minutes in length. No. 1 has a theme and variations, while No. 2 and No. 3 are in three movements: slow, fast, and finale. The piano part is written in such a way that it is fully audible, and it is a wonder that it has never been recorded before. I recommend this disc not only to those interested in the history of piano music for the left hand, but also to those interested in the music of the late Romantic period.
