The history of the hurdy-gurdy can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when it briefly fell into disuse among intellectuals and barely survived as a musical instrument used to play traditional songs in rural areas. The instrument was made for the upper class in response to the dramatic increase in the number of lovers of the instrument under the French name of the vielleur (wheeled viel), and together with the musette, which became popular under the same circumstances at the same time, many songs were born. The gifted Toby Miller has carefully selected works from a variety of perspectives to demonstrate the wide range of possibilities of the viola as a solo instrument and its compatibility with vocal music.Musette (performed by Lazarevich, a virtuoso transverse flute and bagpipe player!) ) and violins, as well as a violoncello duet, the album offers an interesting look at the rococo art of the viola from a different angle than the album of technical sonatas and cantatas released in 2017 (RIC382). The contrast between the full and flexible sound of the musette and the different characteristics of the violin, which rubs the same strings, is also worth listening to.
