As Armin Knapp was among the first to point out in 1908, “the opening 22 measures contain all the archetypes of the work’s themes and motifs,” and Poschner skillfully brings to life the magnificent contrapuntal tapestry woven from these elements. The performance time of approximately 71 minutes might suggest a somewhat fast tempo, but because the phrasing, articulation, and accents are handled with such meticulous care, the “speed” never feels overwhelming. The mysterious, meditative, and at times melancholic chorale-like melodies are presented with a solid, grounded presence.
