Recorded at the world premiere! The Prophets\" was originally conceived as the fourth and final act of Weill's musical drama \"The Way to the Promised Land. It was the last work Weill wrote in Europe and the last large-scale work in German. However, \"The Way to the Promised Land\" was not performed in Europe, and Weill fled to the U.S. to escape the tide of anti-Semitism. 1937 saw the premiere in New York with English lyrics and a new title, \"The Way Forever,\" but perhaps because of its length, there is no record of any performance after the premiere. The recording here is a reconstructed concert cantata commissioned by the BBC Proms from David Drew, a British music journalist and critic known for his research on Weill.
