Born in Yorkshire, he was active in the choir of the local Wakefield Cathedral, then studied piano and voice at the Royal Academy of Music and composition at the Oxford Conservatory, where he was remarkably active in the field of church music. This album, made to commemorate the 35th anniversary of his death, contains choral works, including five world premiere recordings. The main work is \"Laudes animantium,\" a charming praise of various animals by double chorus, soloists, and children's chorus. Other works include carols and part-songs, which are Leighton's specialty. The performance is by Londinium, founded in 2005 by Andrew Griffiths. The chamber choir specializes in contemporary works, and here, too, the ensemble performs Leighton's vibrant works.
