He honed his orchestration skills as an assistant to Franz Liszt in his youth and is regarded as one of Switzerland’s leading symphonists, having composed more than 10 symphonies. Raff, who was also an accomplished pianist, left behind a large body of work, including piano pieces. These works have gained a strong and enduring following in Japan thanks to their expansive beauty—evocative of the Swiss landscape—and their warm sound, rooted in the Romantic tradition. The unaccompanied choral works included on this album were all composed by Raff from the late 1930s through his 1940s; as a late bloomer, these are magnificent works crafted with the mature artistry he had developed by the time he gained recognition for his Symphony No. 1.
