The program featured Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, a work that Heiting had conducted on numerous occasions. The concert was conducted by Simon Rattle, who will assume the role of principal conductor beginning in the 2023–24 season. The performance—a fusion of the Mahler tradition cultivated by successive principal conductors such as Kubelik, Mazel, and Jansons, and the world-class musical prowess of the orchestra—was an overwhelming success under the baton of one of today’s foremost Mahler conductors. Rattle, who has released a CD of this same work with both the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, was so moved by the concert’s performance that he strongly requested a CD release.
