When, by chance, the king overhears Amelia confessing at the prayer room of the witch Ulrika that she, too, is tormented by her love for him, he is overjoyed. Meanwhile, the Count, having discovered his wife’s infidelity, orders her to take her own life. He then joins forces with a group of dissidents plotting to assassinate the King and sets his sights on the King’s life at a masquerade ball held at the palace…\n\nVerdi’s concept for an opera based on the assassination of a real-life Swedish king underwent various twists and turns due to strict censorship by the authorities, eventually taking shape as *Un ballo in maschera*, with the setting moved to Boston, then a British colony. It premiered in Rome in 1859 to rave reviews. This recording is the world’s first video documentation of a performance of *Gustavo III*, based on a comparative critical edition score (Ricordi Complete Edition) in which musicologist Ilariana Leach applied the original libretto of *Gustavo III*—as originally conceived by Verdi—to *Un ballo in maschera*.\nFeaturing an innovative production with a contemporary touch based on the original concept by the master stage director Graham Vick, who passed away suddenly in 2021 (directed by Jacopo Spiretti), featuring a striking contrast between the expansive, beautiful voice of Piero Pretti in the title role and the rich, resonant singing of Amartushin Enkbat as the Count. Among the female cast, Anna Pilozzi as Amelia dramatically sings of her romantic woes; veteran Anna Maria Kiuri as Ulrica exudes an eerie atmosphere; and rising star Giuliana Gianfardoni as Oscar delivers a charming vocal performance. Roberto Abbado’s refined conducting, bringing together the outstanding cast and orchestra, fully captures the essence of this Verdi masterpiece—a work that has assimilated the style of French grand opera and is moving toward full maturity—leaving nothing to be desired.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Dynamic","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53374646812961,"sku":"4589538783228","price":5661.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538783228.jpg?v=1787632180","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4589538783228","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
