With the intercession of his wife, Proserpina, Pluto grants Orfeo’s request—but on the condition that “he must never look back at his wife following behind him until they reach the surface”…\n\nIn 1607, Monteverdi’s *Orfeo*, which would come to be hailed as the first masterpiece of the newly born genre of “opera,” premiered in Mantua. This disc features *Orfeo*, recorded live in June 2021 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, with early music maestro Jordi Savall conducting Le Concert des Nations. This marks Savall’s second filmed production of the work (the first was in 2002 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona). The role of Eurydice is played by Luciana Mancini, a prominent figure in the Italian early music scene, with the role of Orfeo played by the rising French star Marc Moillon; the veteran Julio Zanardi, who portrayed Orfeo in the recording from 19 years ago, appears in this production as Orfeo’s father, Apollo. Directed by Pauline Beyer, the staging is simple yet striking: the earthly world is represented by deep red flowers brought onto the empty stage by singers and dancers, while the underworld is depicted through monochrome set design.
