While many early music performers have recorded his works for violin, his only opera, *Sila and Glocjus*, written shortly after his return from the Netherlands to celebrate the wedding of the Dauphin of Louis XV, is surprisingly rare in recorded form. Until the recent release of a recording conducted by Sébastien Delan on ALPHA, the only existing recording of this work was John Eliot Gardiner’s 1986 version; the arrival of this fresh new recording—featuring Vidal, Scherato, and Valiquet—renowned singers at the forefront of the French opera scene—is truly a welcome development. This majestic lyrical tragedy in five acts tells the story of the witch Circe, who falls in love with the sea god Grocchus—who himself is in love with the sea nymph Syra—and, after Grocchus abandons her despite her having once ensnared him with magic, carries out a terrifying act of revenge.
