Among them was the protagonist of this album, Vicente Lusitano (this name simply means “Vicente of Portugal,” and his real name has not yet been identified), was one of the geniuses who flourished across various nations during that era. Moreover, according to records, his maternal ancestors were of African descent, and he is regarded as the earliest Black composer to have published sheet music in Europe. Although he converted to Protestantism in his later years and there are indications he had contact with the court in Stuttgart, the bulk of his musical activity took place within the Roman Catholic church music world, and his reputation as a theorist and composer extended all the way to the inner circles of the Roman Curia. His only surviving collection of works, *Liber primus epigramatum*, was published in Rome in 1551; this recording features a carefully selected collection of 10 masterpieces from that collection. While maintaining clear intelligibility of the lyrics, the a cappella performances—ranging from the tight interplay of four-part harmony to the rich fullness of eight-part texture—offer endless charm. Alongside Palestrina, Lassus, Villart, Vicentino, and other major figures of his time—it is a great pleasure to hear the elegant tapestry of polyphony that captivated so many, rendered through the meticulous singing of the Marian Consort, a group that has made a name for itself on DELPHIAN, the UK’s premier early music label, renowned for its many acclaimed recordings.
Naxos Japan

Tracklisting:

1.Praeter rerum seriem 8vv
2.Regina caeli 5vv
3.Aspice Domine 5vv
4.Ave spes nostra, Dei genitrix 5vv
5.Salve regina 6vv
6.Heu me, Domine 4vv
7.Emendemus in melius 5vv
8.Sancta Maria 6vv
9.Sancta mater, istud agas 5vv
10.Inviolata, integra et casta es 8vv
