He later studied piano and composition in Berlin and was eventually appointed General Music Director of the Berlin Court Opera (later the National Opera). When the Nazis came to power, Brech, who was of Jewish descent, was forced out of the German music scene, but after the war he returned to Berlin and served as General Music Director of the Berlin Deutsche Oper. He had already begun making recordings as early as the mid-1910s, and his name is particularly familiar to record collectors.\nThis opera, *The King of the Alps and the Misanthrope*, was his fifth opera, composed around 1902. When it premiered at the Dresden Court Opera, it was a sensational success. However, since the Nazis banned the performance of all his works, this opera too fell into obscurity. Yet, following the complete collection of his orchestral works (C5481) previously released by CAPRICCIO, it has now been revived through a performance by the Aachen orchestra and choir, both with ties to him. During the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this work is based on the novel of the same name by Ferdinand Raimund (1790–1836), who was active as an actor and playwright. It tells the story of a misanthropic man who, driven by paranoid distrust, terrorizes his family and servants, only to reflect on his own behavior under the guidance of a supernatural force.\nWith a rich orchestral sound reminiscent of Wagner and Humperdinck, this is a compelling work that combines nobility with humor.
