However, Music Director Vincent Dumestrel’s artistic vision has remained unwavering; just as in the early days, he continues to pursue new approaches to early music while keeping in mind the interplay between folk traditions passed down orally and court music. A new recording has been released that showcases the ensemble at the forefront of this approach, pursuing the “authentic” sound of Italian music from the late Renaissance through the Baroque period. Artistic director Dumestre alternates between the traditional southern Italian instrument, the corazzione, and the Baroque guitar as needed, and together with a vocal ensemble whose flexible singing at times evokes folk music, he delves into the raw truth of Italian church music. In the works by Vivaldi and Locatelli, while the exquisite sound of the string ensemble is certainly noteworthy, the highlight is the pure voice of Eva Zaisik, whose performances at opera houses across Europe have been nothing short of spectacular. Among the 16 string players credited are not only renowned French virtuosos but also notable Japanese musicians such as violinists Yoko Kawakubo and Tatsuya Hatano—both of whom have long been active in Paris—and cellist Keiko Gomi.
